Random travels

A few Instagrams from some recent travels last year. On top, from left: leaves on the windshield of my truck following Hurricane Sandy, the long and always cold walk to the track at Meadowood Park, the football stadium at the University of Maryland and the Metro in DC. All photos taken in 2012 with and Ipod Touch.

A horse is a horse

Woodford County, Ky-Horse in a field. A fun start to my trip around the Bluegrass.

Kentucky Journey

Spent the better part of last week photographing a project in my home state of Kentucky, looking for old basketball goals in the rural part of the state that are a staple of a kids life growing up in the bluegrass. During the 2,400 mile journey, I ran across this farmer in Washington County. A fitting way to end my journey on a personal note.

A nice break

Spent the past four days taking a break from work, technology, and life. Four days of camping at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware with my four boys. The weather was spot on, the boys were good, and we had a blast. The last night we were there, we had warm weather, nice light, and a lot of fun. Now on to baseball.

Stepping back in time

I've spent a lot of time recently on trains. Saturday I went from Baltimore to Providence, RI for the AFC Championship game and most recently a quick train trip to New York for a day of meetings. Taking Amtrak out of Penn Station in downtown Baltimore is like stepping back into time. Nothing inside or outside the building has changed in fifty years. Above are a couple photos, the tracks at Penn, left, and the view crossing the Susquehanna River.

Best seat in the house

I am pretty well versed in the world of sport, but when it comes to hockey, I'm usually way behind the eight ball. Hockey has never been one those sports that I grew up following like I did baseball and football. Growing up in the northern Kentucky area, it wasn't a pro sport, only a minor league one, so I never kept on eye on it that closely. That pretty much changed when I had to cover the Winter Classic in Philadelphia earlier this month. The day before the classic I shot the last home game of the season for the Philadelphia Eagles as they hosted the Washington Redskins, a ho hum game that meant nothing as both teams were out of the playoff picture. So, on to the classic the next day and what a grand event that turned out to be for me.
From the time I arrived to the baseball stadium, which was converted to an open air hockey rink for the game, it was nothing but excitement as the host Flyers took on the New York Rangers for a 3p.m. face off with just a hint of winter in the air. I had a great shooting position right behind the goal on the third base side, to the right of the net. As the teams faced off, I couldn't help but be in awe of the event and that fact I had one of the best seats in the house. While the game was pretty normal for a mid-season NHL hockey game, a 3-2 win for the visiting Rangers, it was a great experience for me. The sights, the sounds, the game, all of it. One I'll never forget. And yes, I read about hockey everyday now on the internet machine, I'm hooked.

Patriots

Saturday entailed covering the 112th annual Army-Navy football game in Landover, Md. Everything about the event is special. While it's about a football game in the end, it's also about everything surrounding the game. The cadets, the midshipmen, the tradition, flags, etc. It's nice to see football for what it really is, a diversion from all the turmoil around us. The kids in the stands and on the field will go on to do much greater deeds than playing a sport. God speed.
